Certainly easier, probably cheaper, but I've never been able to bring myself to buy pre-stretched canvas. In Potok's My Name is Asher Lev there's a lovely description of the ritualistic nature of preparing surfaces on which to paint. It has always seemed to me an essential part of the painting process--almost gestational.

  1. Pre-stretched canvas is always stupid anyway. I wish they sold pre-stretched canvas without the crappy gesso layer. When I'm rich I'm going to pay someone to hand-stretch the canvas for me.

  2. By the time you're rich I won't be around to hand-stretch your crappy canvas for you.
